I have an exciting announcement that I’ve shared on Instagram, but I’m just now sharing here on my blog. I’ve started contributing for Oriental Trading Company’s blog. Twice a month I’ll be coming up with a tutorial with some of their fun products (like this tutorial on how to paint watercolor ice cream cones). And who knew they had so many awesome things like a great selection of quality art supplies.
Stop by OTC for the full tutorial on how to paint watercolor ice cream cones.
For this ice cream cone tutorial I used this Prang watercolor set. I was blown away at how amazing this set is. It’s a semi-moist watercolor set, which means that it’s a little bit sticky to touch even when it’s dry. And when you add a little bit of water to it, it becomes very pigmented very quickly. The colors are very rich and vibrant and smooth to paint with. I think this is a great set for beginners, but my one concern is that it is really easy to use way too much paint. I’d recommend using a palette (or the lid of the set) to mix your colors with water and test them out first to avoid using too much paint.
Also the color selection is really beautiful. I’m seriously obsessed with the red violet color, and even though I have a lot of other watercolor sets, I think it’s my favorite shade of purple of any of them.
These ice cream cones are a great project for beginners. If you’re new to watercolors, I’d recommend this post I wrote this spring (10 tips for learning watercolor) and I would highly recommend this creativebug class (beginning watercolor) that is a great way to learn about watercolor basics like blending and layering.
So stop on by the Oriental Trading blog to get the full tutorial on how to paint watercolor ice cream cones. They are so much fun to paint and there are so many different versions you could make. I even made and framed a giant ice cream cone with four scoops.
