This week, Sleeping Beauty was released from the Disney vault. I had already gone to Walmart to pick out a special princess costume for Lyla… my favorite princess, Rapunzel. Then this Saturday, Lyla got dressed up in her Rapunzel dress and shoes, and we headed to Walmart to buy the Sleeping Beauty DVD. Before we left, we made a fun check list of things to do for our special day together.
We decided to make Saturday a special mother-daughter all-things-Disney-princess day. I had already picked out the dress and shoes for Lyla, but she got to pick out a few more Disney princess things for herself in addition to the Sleeping Beauty DVD. She picked out a Rapunzel wig, a soft Disney Princess blanket, and Aurora’s palace pet, Beauty. #DisneyBeauties #collectivebias
Playing dress up and pretending to be great characters like Rapunzel is such a wonderful learning activity for young children. There are so many good qualities that the Disney princesses show, like Cinderella’s kindness to those who treated her poorly, Jasmine’s desire to explore the world, and Belle’s ability to stay true to herself when her world told her she was weird. However, sometimes princesses make mistakes as well, like when Ariel makes a deal with Ursula. Even though the princesses are great role models in many ways, they are not perfect. What’s important is that your little girl’s true role models (her parents) watch the movies with her and talk about all of the valuable lessons.
We put together a fun printable check list called “The Best Day Ever Ultimate Checklist” that you can download and print. There are two versions: the first one is blank and is fun to fill out with all of the fun things you are going to do one day and check them off as you complete them. The second one is a list with all of the fun things Rapunzel does in the song “When Will My Life Begin”. This one is a huge list, but would be a fun checklist to try to complete over the course of a few weeks with your daughter.
We needed to add “take silly pictures for the camera” to the list.
Lyla helped me come up with a lot of the things on our list. She especially wanted to dress up like Rapunzel and go for a walk with Pascal barefoot, because Rapunzel was barefoot in the movie. She also wanted to have a special movie afternoon with her Beauty, her new blanket, and some popcorn. Lyla was so worn out from our day together that she actually fell asleep for a little while on the couch before we even watched the movie.
