Faux Flowers DIY Gift Toppers

Mother’s day is just around the corner, and I know I’m always looking for ideas for meaningful gifts for my mom. Personalized photo gifts are always a huge hit, and Shutterfly has an amazing selection of gift ideas. Plus I’m sharing a very simple gift wrap tutorial that is elegant yet easy to create.

I ended out ordering three photo candles from Shutterfly to send to my mother-in-law for mother’s day. The kids think their candles are the coolest thing ever. You can choose from one of many designs and add your picture to it, or you can upload your own photo. You could even create cute candles out of your kids’ drawings! (P.S. The Grapefruit Blossom smells AMAZING!!!)

Choosing which photos to use was by far the hardest part! But I knew I wanted to make a candle out of baby Oliver dressed as a pineapple. And each of the candles come in a beautiful box too that is perfect for wrapping.

I have recently gotten excited about using faux flowers in crafts. I didn’t realize how beautiful they could be and how easy it is to add them to a project. And I love how this diy gift topper turned out. What’s great is that the gift topper can easily be removed and reused. It looks great against plain kraft wrapping paper and a white ribbon, but you could also add one to a gift bag as well.

What you need:

1. Faux flowers

2. Wire cutters

3. Floral tape

4. Kraft wrapping paper

5. Tape and scissors

What you do:

1. Start by trimming a few flowers to have about a 2-3 inch stem. I also used some faux greens.

2. Secure the stems together with floral tape. Remember, there is no sticky side to floral tape. You have to stretch the tape to activate the stickiness. So stretch and wrap at the same time until the stem feels secure.

3. Wrap your candle box with plain kraft paper. Since the top will be covered, I didn’t worry about the tape showing. Wrap a plain ribbon around both sides of the box and tie it at the top. Trim the ends of the ribbon.

4. Slide the faux flower topper under the ribbon and arrange the flower across the top of the box. You may want to secure the gift topper with a little tape.

I also created a Mother’s day card (I used this beautiful design) mostly full of pictures I took on my cell phone. What’s great is that if you download the free Shutterfly app, you can easily upload any pictures you want from your phone and then use them in future projects.

I also created a couple acrylic photo blocks to give to my mom for Mother’s day this year. I couldn’t find a picture of all three kids together that I was as excited about (if anyone has tips for getting three kids to look at the camera and smile at the same time I’d love to hear them!!!). So I ended out making one of just Oliver from one of his first birthday pictures, and I also immortalized this amazing shot of Benjamin and Lyla at the donut wall. Seriously this is one of my all time favorite pictures for so many reasons. This was actually the first time I had ever ordered the acrylic photo blocks before and I am now obsessed. I can’t get over how cool they look. The pictures even reflect in the edges.

 

As much as I LOVE white background pictures, I feel like the acrylic photo blocks are especially beautiful with pictures that have colorful backgrounds. I love the way the donut reflects inside the block.
