It’s a hand painted canvas with a black silhouette of the nativity and the north star. And both were very easy to make. I promise, you don’t have to be an artist. The kiddos can make this ornament too. First, grab the following supplies (I got mine at Michaels and any craft store will have them.)
- Small canvas – I used 4″x5″.
- Paint – white (Mother of Pearl), light blue (Blue Sky satin), dark blue (Wild Blueberry satin), purple (Purple Yam satin) – I used Martha Stewart paint colors.
- Black paper for the silhouette of the nativity and north star
- Ribbon for hanging – I chose a navy chiffon.
- Glue
STEP 1
Cut your image from black paper. I used my silhouette cameo to cut my images. You can also simply search for “nativity silhouette or north star silhouette”. Print the image, trace it on black card stock or black construction paper and cut out the image. Be sure to size your image, so it fits on your canvas with at least an inch border.
The next color is light blue. Paint the light blue around the circle.
Then use the dark blue paint. Continue in a circular motion all the way to the edge of the canvas. I did the sides too.
Now it’s time to blend. Leave the white center alone. Mix the white paint and the light blue paint and continue in a circular motion around the white center. For the next rings, mix the light blue and the dark blue. There’s really no right or wrong here. Just mix the paint colors, so the color gradually gets darker at the edge of the canvas. I occasionally mixed in a little purple too.
When you have the color rings the way you like them, then let the paint dry.
For the north star, at this point begin to flare out the paint from lightest to darkest over the circles. When you like how the flares look, then let the paint dry. I usually grab a Christmas cookie at this point. It’s always nice to munch on a cookie while watching paint dry.
STEP 5
Staple the ribbon to the back of the canvas, so you can hang your ornament on the tree.
STEP 6
With a black pen, write the year or date or a special message on the back. I wrote “O Holy Night – 2013”.
STEP 7
Hang it on your tree. Be sure to smile while you remember the true meaning of Christmas. And of course, begin singing “O Holy Night”.
I hope you add these ornaments to your collection and have a wonderful Christmas season! Remember to stop by Our Rosey Life. No need to call. I love surprise visits, especially from new friends. We can sit and munch on Christmas cookies at the classic Christmas table I just set.
