Quilted Pocket Camera Cover (Craft Stash Bash #10 – Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom)

I was so happy when Rachel invited me to be a part of her Craft Stash Bash!  I love visiting her blog, so having this opportunity to guest post feels like a huge honor.

Today I am sharing a tutorial for making a quilted cover for a pocket sized camera.  I have a little point and shoot camera that I like to keep in my purse so I can take quality pictures and HD video anytime or place.

This little camera cover is exactly what I needed to help protect my camera.

Materials needed to make a quilted camera cover:

• Fabric scraps (amount needed will depend on the size of your camera, I used some already pieced fabric left over from another project.)
• Felt, fleece or leftover batting
• Elastic cording
• Button
• sewing ruler with bias markings or a cutting mat with bias markings
• Basic sewing supplies (Thread, needle, scissors, fabric marker, fray check, sewing machine)

Instructions:

Step one:  Determine the length and width needed for your camera cover and cut the fabric.

For the length, measure the length of your camera and multiply by 3.25.  Then, add 1/2 inch for seam allowances.   (This is just a guesstimate, if it is too long you can trim it up later.)

For the width, you need width of the camera plus depth times 2. Then add another 1/2 inch for seam allowances.

With these measurements, cut 2 pieces from regular fabric.  One for the outside and one for the inside.  From your leftover felt, batting or fleece, cut one more piece for the middle.

Step 2:  Quilt and assemble the camera cover.

Lay out the top piece right side down, and place the middle piece on top:

Pin the fabric securely in place.

With the ruler and disappearing ink marker, line up the ruler using the 45 degree bias markings and mark straight lines 1.5 inches apart. Then flip the fabric over and mark lines going the other direction.

Sew straight stitches along the lines you drew.

Lay the inside piece of fabric, wrong side down, on top of the quilted piece, batting side facing up.  Sew along the edges with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Trim the seam allowances to about 1/8 inch and trim the corner pieced on a diagonal,  (This helps with turning the points at the bottom of the case.)

Flip the case right side out.

 Press the edges flat.

Step 3.  Sewing the case pocket and flap.

Using the camera, adjust the fabric until you are happy with the placement of the pocket and flap.  Then pin the pocket into place.

Tuck in the raw edges of the flap and pin.  If your flap is too long, just trim to the size that works for you.

Cut a few inches of the elastic cord and tuck it into the folded flap.  Secure the cord in place with a pin.

Stitch right along the edges and back stitch where indicated.

Step 4:  Add the button.

Fold the flap closed and use the cord as a guide to place the button.

Sew on the button and you are done!  Isn’t it cute?

I have made a few of these. They also work great for sunglasses, ipods, Nintendo DS’s, Kindles…  Any object that could use a protective cover!
